In my new talk, I share that I like to think of ideas as promises. The word “promise” holds dual meanings, each of which is equally valuable AND necessary to deliver positive outcomes.

To hold promise means to have the capacity for excellence. To make a promise means to commit to follow through on that excellence.

A great idea is only one half of the equation. The ability to execute on that idea, in a way that’s viable (and sustainable for the team), is just as critical to success. Making sure your teams have the right support, tools, and skills to balance both sides of the equation is where the magic happens.

If a team is struggling, I’ve found it REALLY helpful to figure out on which side of the equation the challenge lies before I make any recommendations for improvement.

(hint: it’s almost never on the “capacity for excellence” side…)
